ABSTRACT
Since the very beginning, photography and video footage have served scientific purposes. Introduced into social research, they have become a useful tool for the world description, and lately, even for its improvement. The article includes a thorough analysis of the recently published “Video in Social Science Research”, a book by Haw and Hadfield; however, its main concern is the application of the participatory video method. The first Polish project utilizing this method, rooted in the participatory action research, was conducted in the Institute of Social Policy of Warsaw University. According to Haw and Hadfield’s classification, undertakings therein should be categorized as “generate participation”. The aim of the project was the integration of children from varying social environments, as means of preventing social exclusion. The facilitators were required to face the basic problem of participation, concerning the role of the participants and their influence on the research continuity. The outcome of the project is the need for further efforts at implementation of the method on Polish ground.
