In the article I make an attempt to estimate the cost of homelessness in Poland in the local dimension. I refer primarily to the omission costs as well to the alternative costs. The literature stresses that the data are incomplete and do not provide sufficient information concerning the spending to help the homeless people. The homelessness is not a mass problem but it always reflects a huge problem of an individual, as the basis of the existence is impaired. The analysis refers to a 1 year period and it is based on SAC and MPiPS-03 data. Quantitative results are underestimated to a large degree what emphasises the need to remain cautious in making qualitative inference. The problem arises due to the lack of the relevant data and the fact that I focus on the actions that should be performed on a local level. I omit e.g. the health care system. The calculated amount implies high omission costs. Comparing the results with the preventing actions’ costs can help in analysing their economic profitability. The literature suggests that occurrence of the homelessness risk is the most appropriate moment to provide help. This emphasises the importance of the prevention policy.
