The spreading use of temporary agency work gives rise to many controversies. The
growth of precarious forms of employment comes with lower-quality jobs and leads to
the segmentation of the labour market. Temporary workers can perceive the acceptance
of employment conditions burdened by transient and insecure relations as a price to
pay for better employment and career development opportunities in the future. Based
on a theoretical discussion and the results of the 2013 survey of Łódź-based firms using
temporary agency workers, the article explores the issue of trust and hope, the two feelings
that accompany workers taking temporary jobs, and juxtaposes their aspirations and realities.
