Japan has a rapidly growing population of older people. Japanese government has been
developing a two sets of policies aimed at coping with this processes — a modern pension
system and the Long-term Care Insurance. The purpose of this article is to present the
history of both parts of Japanese social security system and to outline challenges laying
ahead of them.
